When and Where is Orphan Sunday?
November 12th, 2017, churches and small groups across the globe.
What is Orphan Sunday?
Each year on the second Sunday in November people all around the world stop to take time to pray and advocate for orphans both locally and globally. Thousands of Christians will meet together with the purpose of defending the cause of orphans through advocacy, awareness, fundraising and prayer.
Why Orphan Sunday?
The Bible is clear about the importance of taking up the cause of the fatherless. Numerous verses point to focusing our attention on the needs of the poor, orphaned and widows - those in physical, emotional and spiritual need. Central to Christianity itself is the call to action in caring for the least of these. Orphan Sunday is an opportunity to live out that call - a chance to be a voice for the voiceless, defend the defenseless and make an impact on a local and global scale.
What does it look like to participate in Orphan Sunday?
Whether you are an individual, or you represent a small group or a church, you can participate in Orphan Sunday. Below is a list of ways that you can participate:
-
Be a Voice: We believe that there is power in the simple act of sharing stories. On Orphan Sunday we encourage you to share your story on social media of why Orphan Sunday matters to you. You could share a personal story of how adoption or foster care has impacted your life or you could share a story of one of our kids by sharing one of our blogs.
-
Advocate for Child Sponsorship: Highlight child sponsorship at your church. Then invite people and families to sponsor a child. We’ll provide you with sponsorship cards and other resources to promote child sponsorship on Orphan Sunday. Contact schusa@icmin.org for sponsorship cards.
-
Prayer: For the 15 days leading up to Orphan Sunday, individuals will be praying for specific things related to orphans and the global orphan crisis. Our friends at Lifesong for Orphans have put together a beautiful guidebook to help you pray for orphans leading up to Orphan Sunday. Check it out here.
